Run your Car on Water

Recently my wife and I moved to the country and into a smaller house with garage. Unfortunately  a lot of the odds and ends, including lawnmower, garden tools etc, ended up in the garage leaving a bit of a tight squeeze when it came to parking the car.

As we enjoy a quite mild climate around here I decided that a simple carport at the side of the house would be ideal. The problem being not the weather but the flocks of birds that inevitably inhabit the area, when nature calls it usually ended up on my car.  So I tried drawing up some simple carport plans to protect us from unmentionable stuff falling from the sky.

This proved a bit harder than I imagined as a neighbour pointed out that the building codes round here were quite strict and suggested I look online.

A search for simple carport plans brought up some good results and I was able to download a ‘set’ straight away. The set of plans included not only carport plans but a massive range of projects ranging from a simple bird table to a large garden shed, I made note of a rather cute garden seat for later.

My simple carport plans also included a list of all the materials needed to complete the job; this meant just one trip out to my local supplies store. I was also able to get my timber cut to size which in effect gave me a simple carport kit.

As a carport has to be able to stand up to heavy wind loads the hardest part was digging out a sound foundation to stand it on. Having no sides the roof can act like an airplane wing trying to lift the whole structure off the ground.

Although we live in a moderate climate here it has been known to get some heavy snows so I had to be sure that the roof could cope. All this could be gleaned from my blueprints and the construction only took three days. Now to tackle that garden seat!
