East coast backpack tour?

HI everyone!We(4 of us) are planning a 10-14 day backpack trip to the states (NY,Phil.,Washington…)next summer. We are planning to hire a car and cruise towards the south from NY, a few days stop in each bigger city.It would be a sort of “DiY” tour to keep costs low but not sure if we can really to it or it would be better to go on an organised tour with fixed hotels/motels,tour quide etc.?What do You think?
(There are built in GPS in hired cars aren’t there?)
Plus if anyone have some suggestions on what’s worth to see – and not to miss apart from the compulsory sightseeing spots is more than welcome.
Thank You!

It’s very doable. You can take I-95 south from NYC, it goes through Philly, Baltimore, and Washington DC.
Purchase a US Atlas when you arrive, or by mail if you want to do some planning before you start out. It will have maps of all the states plus all the major cities.
Have a fun trip.
